After more than 30 years, Mike and Elaine Filkins are heading back into missions. Our focus is on needy pastors who serve their congregations faithfully with very few resources. We were astounded to learn that many of them live on about $30/month.
Our goal is to provide education on how to build inexpensive, easy to maintain, organic raised garden beds to help them feed their families and have a little extra to share with others. This is not a farm-to-market enterprise but rather our version of:
“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”
About 10 years ago, we intentionally changed our gardening techniques to line up with the agricultural laws in the Foundational Covenant (Old Testament) of the Bible. The first season we witnessed improved fruitfulness, and each year after that, stronger plants, greener foliage, and an even greater yield. It was quite by accident that we discovered the benefits of raised beds, but now we are convinced that with the use of organic material (which is free), raised bed gardens, because of the way they wick the moisture from the bottom-up to the plant roots, are similar to the conditions of the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:4-6)
We will be traveling to the Philippines for 2 weeks in February to build 4-6 raised bed gardens, fill them with soil, get plants started, and train Filipino workers to tend them until we return in October. This is a very special time, an annual Pastoral Care Conference to be held at Camp Jabez, which is near Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The Lord has miraculously raised all the funds needed for this project, but we greatly desire prayer support for this venture. Would you join us in asking our Lord for the following things:
- Safety while we travel and work.
- Good weather when we build the beds
- That God will use Mike to cast the vision well in his opening message to the 350 pastors who will attend the conference in October 17-20th.
- That God would prepare the pastors’ hearts to embrace this concept of gardening
- That God will bring us men who are keen, interested in gardening, and able to teach others.
- For the final touches on a booklet that we are writing with illustrations to be handed out to the pastors who attend the conference in October.
Word of this Filipino project has spread quickly, and we already have a request from a Bible College classmate to bring this teaching to the great continent of Africa.
